Nordegg Launches Bearsmart Program
May 11, 2011
Nordegg residents interested in living safely with bears
NORDEGG - The mountain town of Nordegg has launched a Bearsmart program to protect bears and residents in the fast-growing community. One of the first actions of the group has been the sale of bearproof garbage cans, to enable residents to store garbage safely. There has been extraordinary demand for the tough, locking bearproof containers – the first call for orders resulted in 16 bearproof bins being purchased by local residents and businesses.
“There is a lot of interest in living safely alongside bears in Nordegg” says Simon Dyer of the Nordegg Bearsmart Committee “Nordegg is prime habitat for grizzly bears and ensuring bears and garbage don’t mix is one of the most important ways to protect people and bears. I’d like to thank all the Nordegg residents and businesses who have purchased bins – the response has been amazing!”
The green “Bear Saver” brand bins are available in 32, 65 and 95 gallon sizes. The garbage carts were delivered to Nordegg residents last week and a new bulk order is being developed to meet continued demand. The Bearsmart Committee was supported by Alberta Sustainable Resource Development, who also provided free shipping of the bulky bins to Nordegg.
“Its great to live in a natural place like Nordegg and keeping my family safe while helping bears is why I bought a bearproof bin” says Nordegg resident and local contractor Scott Sheldrake of Shunda Creek Contracting Ltd..
Nordegg Bearsmart is a committee of the Nordegg Community Association, and has applied for funding through the Alberta Ecotrust Program to continue with programs to purchase bear bins, educate community members and ensure Nordegg develops in a way that minimizes conflict between people and bears.
